2021 March – Week 9

Holy shit, it’s March.

I made a new friend! Well, okay, Jasper and I aren’t exactly friends yet… But when I realized it wasn’t a stray cat eating from the food dish on my porch, I opened the door to say hi and he just sort of speed-walked away. This bodes well for two reasons:

  1. I don’t think he has rabies.
  2. He didn’t feel scared enough to run.

I got to see his little butt scoot “casually” down the porch steps and then disappear behind the corner of the house.

I know the way to his heart. It’s only a matter of time…

I seriously cracked myself up on Monday during yoga. Tuned in via Zoom, I listened to Ashley instruct us to get into a wide-legged forward fold. When she said, “See if you can touch your forehead to the ground… You might need a block,” I literally snorted. I took a pic and sent it to her and Nick, then proceeded to giggle for the next five minutes as I went into the next pose.

But then my giggles gave way to sniffles because I miss in-person yoga. We would have been laughing together.

During breakfast on Tuesday, I got a good morning text from Steven and Dexter, who I have decided to call Puxter from here on out (Puppy + Dexter = Puxter). He’s the goodest boy.

Mommazzito and Popsicle popped over Wednesday bearing Perogies, and my dad showed me the progress he’s made on the song I was teaching him. The student has surpassed the teacher. He is, after all the pianist in the family, not me. He actually writes songs, I just learn some from YouTube videos.

I added a new decoration to my living room wall— a relic my mom made me a bunch of years ago. The paper cranes were for Michelle, even though she didn’t die of cancer like the girl from the book. The branch brings me joy, though. And melancholy. Which makes it a very suitable decoration to hang above my Velveteen Rabbit and Kurt Vonnegut quotes.

Aung messaged me to inform me he learned a new word this week, which is serendipitous because Dr. Erion and I had been discussing magniloquence a few days before (I mean that both ways it can be taken), and trying to wrap our heads around the difference between resilience and resiliency. In Dr. Erion’s words:

“One has a useless, pretentious-sounding extra syllable favored by sloppy journalists?

Wrote a lot this week, too. I’m pushing towards my arbitrary, self-imposed goal of a finished round of revision by March 15th. I. Am. Determined.

I got helpful writing support from my morning writing crew, Tuesday night’s WWAG, and the CNY critique group. I also got an offer from a published YA author to give some querying assistance when the time is write. A caps locked GRATEFUL to her for that. And when I participated in the Murphy Writing event with Kath and Debbie, I wrote a joyful piece separate from the novel, and that felt good— like there’s more story in me.
